Q: What are the 7 Principles anyway?
Q: What are we signing up for?
A: The program is presented in several formats. You choose what works for you. A weekly class format held in the evenings for 4 weeks, an introductory "Mini Tune Up", the Comprehensive Workshop option which is 8 hours held over two half days, and an extended 'Couples Weekend Getaway' format. Check out the registration page for current options.
Q: Do we have to share our problems/concerns with the group? We don't want to disclose personal issues publicly.
A: Don't worry, there is no group sharing. Couples exercises are done privately - personal information stays between you and your partner.
Q: We aren't married, but are in a committed partnership or are engaged. Is this material relevant for us too?
A: Yes! The material covered in the 7 Principles Program workshop is ideal for couples in committed relationships. There is also no better way to get off to a great start in your married life than to know how to make and keep your relationship strong.
Q: We are a same sex couple. Is this for us?
A: Yes! The skills are helpful for any couple in a committed relationship.
Q: My spouse or partner is unavailable, but I want to learn this stuff. Can I attend by myself?
A: The material is designed to be taught so you and your partner can practice skills during the class time. Try to schedule a time to attend when both of you are available. Check out the resources at Gottman.com for DVD's, books, and other materials you can access on your own.
Q: We really want to attend, but we don't have a babysitter for our kids. What can we do?
A: Some couples have traded babysitting with friends - you watch their kids when they go to the workshop, and they watch yours while you go to the workshop. The kids have fun together, the babysitting is free, and the parents nurture their marriage/relationship - a win-win solution!
Q: Uh oh. What if we can't make it on the dates we signed up for?
A: Our cancellation policy allows you to cancel your registration up to 14 days prior to the workshop with a refund minus a $25 administrative fee. You can also choose to transfer your registration to future workshop dates (if there is space available) instead of getting a refund. We're sorry, but due to fixed expenses no refunds can be issued within 14 days of the event, but we will transfer your registration to a future workshop date of your choice - space permitting.
Q: Do you serve beverages and snacks at the workshop? How about lunch?
A: Yes. Coffee, tea, water, and snacks are available all day. In the Comprehensive Workshop format, a light lunch is included on Day 2.
Q: When do we need to arrive to get a good seat?
A: Really, all of the seats are good. You should arrive about 20-30 minutes before the workshop starts to check in, get your coffee, and settle in.
Q: Do we have to bring anything with us to the workshop?
A: Nope, you will get all of your materials on the first day of the workshop.
Q: What about bad weather?
A: If the weather is dangerous, we will cancel and reschedule the event. We will try our best to contact you by phone or email if the event needs to be rescheduled due to weather.
Q: Be honest. Is there homework involved?
A: Yes, if you like, you can read sections of the book The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work and do additional exercises at home. However, even if you don't read the book you will still get a lot out of the material presented in class.
Q: Can I give the workshop as a gift? My daughter/ son/niece/grandson/friend is getting married and this would be perfect for them!
A: Yes, please contact Beth Schmit for information on how to give the workshop as a gift, or how to register for the workshop on your wedding registry!
Q: I'm organizing events for my church/community group. Can you come to our event, or customize a class for us?
A: Of course! Contact Beth Schmit directly to arrange details.
